A comfort pack is a combination of medications that help calm your family members for their visits to their veterinary appointments of all sorts.
Comfort packs are for your family members that are:
Example appointments:
The purpose of comfort packs is to make their visit with us not as stressful. The last thing we want is to have them come in for regular nail trims, and need four employees to help keep them still because they dislike having their nails done that much. It isn’t fair to them, and all that does is keep reinforcing to them that we are “bad people”.
Becoming more “fear responsible” is a trait that RVH takes to heart and will do anything possible to make our furry friends as comfortable as possible.
The medications used are trazodone, gabapentin, and sometimes acepromazine. The combination prescribed to you are given at least 90 minutes PRIOR to leaving the house. That way it has time to sit in and take hold, hopefully lowering their stress threshold. We will always start at the lowest effective dose for your pet and adjust from there.
If a comfort pack is recommended to you for your pet, please know we are not judging or calling them a “bad dog/cat”. We are looking out for the best quality of life for them so they aren’t so stressed when they come to see us, and can get the best quality medicine from us as possible as well.
If you have questions or concerns in relation to Comfort Packs, please don’t hesitate to call and ask Dr. Sampson.
